MYDG is an umbrella group for the governance of 3 youth centres in Muirhouse.

The Klub, The Junction and St Paul’s are youth groups attended by young people aged 8-24 living in Muirhouse and the surrounding areas.  In 1997 in order to maximise the contribution of volunteer and sessional staff to youth work in the area, participants lobbied local activists and councillors to establish MYDG.  MYDG’s role is to ensure adequate open provision, development projects, volunteering and leadership that is targeted according to need and co-ordinated in each centre.  MYDG also links local youth work with local, national and European youth and volunteer strategies.

MYDG aims to engage young people through open youth clubs, sports groups, outdoor education, group work, non-curricular education, employability programmes, 1:1 support and residential programmes.  Collaborative work with other voluntary organisations, local schools, community groups and European partner organisations is a key component of our provision. A major part of MYDG’s work is through engaging young volunteers in volunteer traineeships accredited through schemes such as Project Scotland, European Volunteer Service, Youth Achievement Awards and The Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The young volunteers often move onto paid employment with both MYDG and other organisations in the area.

MYDG also has a strong history of hosting European volunteer projects with six volunteers having successfully completed 12 months with the organisation in the past 4 years and a number of group exchanges to Spain and Germany have been very successful. MYDG has both the capacity and experience to manage further European projects and feel that the European volunteer, organisation, wider community and especially the young people benefit greatly from the experience.
